The “Janes” Surname.

Meaning.

The Surname “Janes” appears to be derived from an Ancestor or Father (Patronymical) it could be associated with the meaning “Descendant of Jan” (John), although this interpretation is not the result any of onomastic research on my part, you may find other interpretations for the meaning of “Janes” in relation to the surname.

BRYAN JANES, TIPTOE, HANTS, UK.

descended from

BARNARD HOPKYNS ALIAS JANE(S) 1563 - 1648.

YEOMAN OF IVINGHOE - ASTON, BUCKS.

Barnard Hopkyns alias Jane born c 1563 in Ivinghoe, Bucks. This is the first occurrence I have of the use of this alias by my ancestors, I do not know why they used it, It was at a time before the use of surnames in England had properly settled. The alias continued to be used over the next two centuries. The spelling and orientation of the two names being the only variation. Through the various generations it became Hopkins alias Jane, Hopkins alias Janes, Janes alias Hopkins, finally disappearing in the early 1700’s when the children of Martin Janes alias Hopkins were christened with the surname Janes. I have not come across this alias anywhere else in the UK, it appears to be unique to this family and the Ivinghoe area of Bucks.
